Light Pipe - Clear Core (6mm, 5' long)

Light pipe is very cool stuff. It transmits light along its length, like fiber optic cable, but it also "leaks" light along the way, causing the entire length of tubing to light up when a bright light is shined into one end. It can be easily cut to length with a pair of scissors or a knife and by using a piece of shrink-tube to attach a super bright LED to one end, you can produce an EL-like effect.

Light pipe is great for decorative applications, you could even sew it into an e-textile project. It's also a good way to 're-route' an indicator light that's buried inside an enclosure, so that it's visible on the surface. Putting different colored LEDs at either end produces some very cool effects as well!

This is a 5 foot length of 6mm diameter light pipe. This light pipe has a clear core and can be easily connected to a basic 5mm LED with a length of shrink tubing or some tape. This works great with our super bright LEDs.

I imagine that green laser could be fun using with this. Adds a little more control of the beam so to say.

Whats the melting point of this stuff... Withstand a low-temp glue gun?

So I ended up ordering two pieces of this stuff. And using a super bright white LED on one end works, but the colour changes as it goes down the line. Starts off white, then blue/green, then yellow/orange. Kinda strange, not what I was hoping for, but still cool stuff!

what is the luminance loss per foot of tube?

If I buy 2, can you send them as a 10ft piece?

  • I just shot a short video of this in action, It's pretty good on the light reflectance with the white core. Havent tried the clear one. Definitely need to have an LED at both ends, and it will loose some luminosity over distance. I'll shoot up a link later, getting ready for a 3 day weekend at the lake.

I feel like this is what they used in the tail light of some BMWs. Are you guys going to post up some "in action" shots?

Oh wow. Between this and the addressable LED strips, this is gonna be the best Christmas ever.
