This is the same product as the RedBoard - PTH Kit. The difference is this version comes in fancy clamshell packaging meant for our distributors that need it. Regular customers are welcome to order, but we want to limit the amount of extra packaging finding its way into the trash heap.
This kit contains everything you need to build your very own Uno-compatible "RedBoard" development board! Simply follow the Assembly Guide and after some basic soldering, you'll have made a fully-functional Arduino-compatible development board (in fashionable SparkFun Red). The included ATmega328 comes pre-loaded with the "Optiboot" bootloader so you don't have to worry about loading the firmware, simply solder it together, connect an FTDI Basic and load your favorite sketch using the Arduino IDE.
After the board is assembled, it can be powered by an FTDI connection or a regulated 6-15VDC power supply connected to either the DC Barrel jack or the new JST footprint.
Note: You will need either an FTDI Basic or FTDI cable to load code using the Arduino IDE.
This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.
Skill Level: Rookie - The number of pins increases, and you will have to determine polarity of components and some of the components might be a bit trickier or close together. You might need solder wick or flux.

If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about communication and code.
Skill Level: Rookie - You will need a better fundamental understand of what code is, and how it works. You will be using beginner-level software and development tools like Arduino. You will be dealing directly with code, but numerous examples and libraries are available. Sensors or shields will communicate with serial or TTL.

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.
Skill Level: Rookie - You may be required to know a bit more about the component, such as orientation, or how to hook it up, in addition to power requirements. You will need to understand polarized components.

What we need is to have either this fellow, or its regular one reintroduced in the stream for the currently new retail vendor.
This is a nice kit. the instructions are good. the board is solid. It works as advertised. However, I made a boo boo. I went and put a wrong cap around the crystal. so it stops oscillating after a bit. It works fine until the clock stops though. I'm going to fix the error when the parts I ordered come in. The numbers on the disc capacitors are insanely tiny. May I suggest that you mark or bag the 22pf caps so they are easier to sort from the .1mf ones. thanks much for great fun stuff, tap
