You may be familiar with ePaper or eInk displays from eReaders like the Kindle. This display is the next step up with three colors instead of the classic two. The displays really do seem like paper, with easy visibility from almost any angle and even in sunlight. It also features ultra low power consumption. You can even unplug the display entirely without losing your image! This display does take 14 seconds to refresh, but it is ideal for applications where information is updated infrequently, like a weather station or a high tech label.
This 4.2" ePaper display uses black, white, and red pigments on a 400 by 300 pixel matrix.
We do not plan to regularly produce SparkX products so get them while they’re hot!

What is the correct ePaper controller to use with this? The small 1.54" display includes a SPI-based controller with it.
It has a built-in controller, check out the datasheet. That lists all the SPI commands to control the display. Note that some of the pins require extra consideration, see section 7-5 "Reference Circuit" of the datasheet.
Is 14 seconds the correct update lag? Not 1.4 seconds?
Yes, 14 seconds is the correct update lag. I don't have this specific panel, but I do have a similar, red/white/black panel on a pHAT from Pimoroni. The three color ones are very very slow. Two color displays are much faster -- those are the ones with the 1 second or so refresh time.
