This is a USB 2.0 type A to Mini-B 5-pin cable. You know, the mini-B connector that usually comes with USB Hubs, Cameras, MP3 players, etc. You can use this with our LiPo Charger, FTDI Basic Programmer or even combine it with the CP210x IC and SMD Mini-B connector to create your own portable USB device!
The best part? It's SparkFun Red and has the flame logo embossed on the connector shroud. Sweet.

No issues, works. As described.

This was my fault; I should've been more careful with exactly what I'm ordering. Therefore, I'm keeping it since it was not your fault.
Bought this along with the FTDI Breakout board and it fired up the first time and did what I need it to do. Installing the drivers was painless. Happy with the product.
Very nice. Can't wait for the USB B.
Sadly, my ICD3 does use USB B...
cool, but any chance of releasing these in a micro B version, as well?
This is super cool, but I'd like to see shorter versions too. 6 feet is too long for "desktop" use, like connecting to a development board or external drive. Thus, maybe offer an 24 inch and 12 inch version or something like that. My WD external pocket drive came with a 12 inch cable and I love it - very portable and I use it for more than the HD. I'd prefer SparkFun red, though...
Yes, please offer each of the USB standards and each with at least two length options. Love the idea of a 6 footer but small, contained cordage would be nice as well for prototyping within confines. Keep these ideas going.
A nice cable, Im going to use it for the PicoBoard.
For those living in civilized countries: 6 feet = 1.80 m :-)
;-) Indeed!
are you kidding me. why would you have so many photos of everything but the type of connector
Bright red! Awesome for educators. My students seem to walk off with these, and while I am sure its an accident the red will make it easier to spot!
When can we see a USB 3.0 version of this cable? Or even a Micro-USB? The Cerberus is cool, but it sounds like it has issues, and the extra heads tend to get in the way of normal usage.
I second the micro-B request. Mini-B is dead.
Good suggestion. I will look into getting USB 3.0 cables.
I wish this was black. I can't put red cables on the things I'm making, so I have to buy from somewhere else, where I don't know the quality is good. I was willing to pay your higher price for these when they were black. Black is the old black, gentlemen.
Wow! Can you bring out more cables? I love them!
The description is a bit misleading. I didn't buy a cable to go with an FTDI breakout because I have a camera, three phones and a USB hub with USB cables. Unfortunately none of them are Mini-B! A closeup of the connector would be helpful. This photo helped me find the cable I needed (on my H2 Zoom recorder): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mini_usb_AB.jpg
In the spirit of Open Hardware, will you share how you got the custom moldings made?
Absolutely! We created a Pro-Engineer design then shopped it to various vendors we use for injection molding. They gave us quotes and we chose one to get samples from. We should be able to post the engineering files if you wanted them.
You might want to consider making the mini-B side molding expose more of the connector. Since a lot of hobbyist boards have the USB socket flush with the edge of the board, any enclosure gets in the way of the plug fitting in correctly.
It's easy enough to trim by hand, but considering who your customers are it might make sense to fix this at the factory.
Good feedback. We'll tweak the design file and see if we can pull back the modling a bit around the miniB connector.
