Welcome to the wonderful world of M2M (Machine-to-Machine) communication with the GM862 Quad Band Cellular Module by Telit. This tiny module will allow you to connect your embedded device anywhere in the world where cell phones are used. This version (GM862-QUAD) is compatible with the various 850/900/1800/1900MHz frequencies of cellular networks across the globe.
You will need to provide a SIM card. Pull the SIM card from your phone, insert it into the module, and voila, you are making calls under your cellular account. Works with all providers currently supporting SIM cards (AT&T, T-Mobile, and Cingular).
The GM862 module is controlled via AT commands. This means all you have to do is send a string of serial characters such as "ATD 3035551234" and the module will place a call. No fuss, no mess. Once the module has connected to another module or modem, a serial connection is made and data can be transferred as simply as passing and receiving serial strings through the module.
Note: This module does not support Python and is firmware version: PS:5.02.203/AL:6.04.204-GM862 QUAD. This is an older revision of the hardware, but it should work just fine for most of the normal AT commands. It does not support the newer, Easy GPRS commands. Unfortunately, it can't be upgraded to any newer versions.

A viola is a bowed string instrument.
Is there compatible breakout board that sparksfun currently sell?
Is this the same module that you use in your Port-O-Rotary phones?
I'm working with Uber Board and naw, I arrived on the part of GM862 and I'd like to know if to communicate with it, we have to put any code, like the Bluetooth. Because, we set the MUX to cell module, send power pulse, and after, what we have to do?
PLEASE, could somebody help me?
my e-mail is: jhcbj@hotmail.com
sorry for the wrong english
Not to rain on SparkFun's parade (love this site!) but you can get the updated GM862-PY(THON SUPPORT!) for $80 here: http://www.semiconductorstore.com/cart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=42834#details
I'd rather buy it from SparkFun, but no way i'm going to buy an older module with less functionality for more.
I also would like to know if SparkFun could provide the GM862-QUAD-PY version of this module. The ability to run python code in the chip makes it possible to eliminate a microcontroller in my design, and simply connect SPI devices to gather inputs.
Unfortunately, looking at the dates of the older posts makes is look pretty lonely here in the comment section.
One vendor for the GM862-QUAD-PY appears to be trenz-electronic.de for about $135 US.
Are there any UMTS versions of these going to be available?
Also can these handle all the connecting to the APN and stuff and just present as a serial port a connection to a remote IP address?
Is this module (GM862 Cellular Quad Band Module) in this site support python scripts or not,it's essential to know before i buy it, as i saw in telit site two different modules(The GM862-QUAD) and the (The GM862-QUAD-PY), which one is this.thanks
