This is a very simple, but surprisingly handy project box designed by SparkFun. The box comes with three plastic pieces and includes 4 screws. The insert on the end of the box can be CNC milled (or just dremeled out by hand) for connectors, LEDs, switches.
The bottom section of the enclosure has a unique pattern of raised dots. These dots are on a 0.2" grid. Our plastic standoffs fit nicely onto the 0.09" diameter dots. This allows for a large number of standoff configurations. Using our plastic standoffs, you can mount any shaped board into the enclosure. A small amount of super glue or hot glue will make the mounting permanent.
The outer corners of the SFE box also fit a Eurocard sized PCB (100x80mm). This makes the SFE box ideal for enclosing Olimex and other large development boards.
Whether it's for assembling a kit, hacking an enclosure, or creating your own parts; the DIY skill is all about knowing how to use tools and the techniques associated with them.
Skill Level: Competent - You might need to break out the power tools. Nothing beyond a power drill or rotary tool should be required, but you might have a hard time with just a screwdriver and hammer. Cutting holes into plastic or metal might be required.

Hey, that's a great looking case! Why not make one in Metric units (since only the US, Liberia and Myanmar use inches...)?
Using nice even metric numbers, it could be 110 x 95 x 30mm, with a 5mm dot grid.
Also, a photo showing the case in an average-size hand would be helpful!

These cases are very nice to work with and very well built. The removable/replaceable faceplates are a very welcome design feature.
One note: If you plan on using one with an Arduino Duemilanove, you'll find that two of the board's mounting holes match up to the raised pegs on the case floor, but the third (just next to the sixth analog-in channel) does not. Just use a Dremel to grind away one of the pegs and you'll end up with a flat surface large enough for the standoff to be lined up properly (and held with glue). This case is big enough for the Arduino and a 9V battery to power it. Very nice.
This is an awesome project box and the fact that SFE makes wonderful protoboards that fit them is even better.
Do you sell a piece of perfboard that fits perfectly in this?
Yes, the Koala protoboard fits it perfectly and has some nice bonuses.
Please make it cheaper or make another version that is simpler and more affordable. I would really like something like this but it's too pricy
I love these cases for my projects, but would love to see a version with a battery compartment and cover so it's easy to change batteries rather than unscrewing
Note: this will not fit an uno with a ProtoScrewShield (http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9729). It to small height wise by about 1/4 inch.

The 28 pin PIC dev board (DEV-00018) shown in the product photos doesn't actually fit in this case because the voltage regulator sticks up too high. If you bend it over some, the case will close most of the way, but it's still not a great fit.

Can, anyone, comment on the PCB mounting holes size for this box? (the Eurocard sized PCB).
That size should go on the "PCB Size format" document (please, Sparkfun, can you update that one?).
There was a comment by EmbeddedMan on December 6, 2009 at 9:21 PM that suggest .125" dia holes for this: can somebody confirm this?
From the box's tech drawing, I could think of ~.12" holes, but I'm a little unsure (I still don't have one of these).

sparkfun should make a version of this for the arduino mega. anyone know of a good arduino mega case similar to the chameleon but cheaper?
Can you provide a 3D model for this case? I want to use this for a project I am modelling everything up first to make sure drill holes and components (PCB, LCD, connectors, etc.) fit and line up properly. IGES, STEP, SolidWorks, or Pro-E would be great. Thanks!
Where does sparkfun make these custom enclosures? they used to have a link on the right had side under "Resources" but it's no longer there.
Wonderful project box. If a revision 2 is coming out, I'd like to see the following:
1.) Face plates with cut-outs, or guide lines that match the protoboards. I'd buy 100 if all I had to use was an exacto knife to get connectors/leds/switches/power plugs through the case.
2.) A flat top surface. I'd accept the Sparkfun logo in radiation caused luminescence if the top was flat.

The PCB Size Format drawing is a little confusing - the bottom line should not be blue (it makes the text confusing) but rather black. Also, it does not contain a suggested size for the four corner holes. From looking at the SFE_Box.pdf, I think they should be .125" dia holes.
Very nice shape for handheld projects.
Although the huge logo can be a bit of a problem if you are looking for a place to gracefully fit an LCD and a joystick on the top cover.
