Replacement:WRL-10420. This new version is a Series 2 which uses a much newer firmware. It is compatible with the Series 2.5, if you upgrade the firmware through X-CTU.
This is the new 2.4GHz XBee XBP24-BUIT-004 module from Digi (formally Maxstream). Series 2.5 improves on the power output and data protocol. The Pro series have the same pinout and command set of the basic series with an increase output power of 50mW! These modules take the 802.15.4 stack (the basis for Zigbee) and wrap it into a simple to use serial command set. These modules allow a very reliable and simple communication between microcontrollers, computers, systems, really anything with a serial port! Point to point and multi-point networks are supported.
Note: Series 1 and Series 2.5 XBee modules have the same pin-out. However, Series 1 modules cannot communicate with new Series 2.5 modules.

What exactly does that mean? Sparkfun won't carry this anymore?
To get the 1 mile range, do I need one of these on each end, or can one be lower power?
From my limited understanding, it probably depends on the architecture. There are two possible cases:
1) If it requires a handshake of some sort, it won't work
2) If the modules can act as a "radio" then the one with the longer range could transmit and the other could receive.
In other words, I would just get two long range units.
hello i have many of these radios but all show max data 115kbps and not 250kbps as max data rate. is there something I should do enable this speed, or some condition that allows to enable it?
Against 60mW version, this is a series 2.5 device which has more networking functionalities than previous version. And about power, I think they draw more range because of the external antenna and interface antenna adapter you must add to the U.FL connector.
What is the advantage of this item over the 60mW (WRL-8710) XBee Pro? Granted, this one has 10 digital pins (as opposed to 8) but loses 2 ADC pins in the process (4 < 6). It also has less power (50 210mA), and costs more.
Don't know why my last sentence got scrambled, but I tried to say that it has less power (50mW vs. 60mW), and draws MORE power (295mA vs. 210mA).
