First things first, announcing the caption contest winner. We won't always like to pick the caption that got the most upvotes, but this one was just too good. Congrats to jma89 - you're the winner!

If you do any custom PCB design work, chances are you've at least played around with EAGLE. We use it a lot here at SparkFun for creating our custom designs. Today we wanted to point your attention to some free webinars about EAGLE!

First is a webinar solely about new features in Eagle V6. This webinar will analyze new features in V6 such as differential pair routing, design reuse through the import function, library improvements, and more. You can register here. The webinar will take place on 2/19/2013 at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The other upcoming webinar will cover LTSpice and Eagle. In this webinar, you'll learn how to leverage the new LTSpice integration in EAGLE. You'll learn how to create a component from scratch in EAGLE that you can easily use in LTSpice, and you'll cover SPICE model assignments as they apply to parts you might want to model. You'll also cover the important libraries that EAGLE now brings to facilitate simulation. This webinar takes on March 5, 2013 at 2 p.m. Eastern. You can register here.

Check them out!

    Whoohoo! Thanks SparkFun!

This was enough to take my mind off the Michigan snow that's currently piling on top of my car. :-)

I know a lot of people don't like webinars (mainly for the replayability without the Internet connection), but they are fantastic ways to stay on top of the latest technologies and ways to do things. Granted most of the ones on EETimes are targeted towards practicing engineers, they are still good ways to learn skills that will translate very well into hobbyist projects.

So I suggest getting a nice lunch, and watching an hour long webinar on Eagle. That's what I'll do.

Cool! Thanks for recording and making this available :) Will be attending another webinar about making Arduino Shields using Eagle - hopefully theirs will be available for download at some point as well.
      ( See Member #66340 / Oyvind's post above, I believe registration has ended )

We recorded the webinar hosted on February 19, 2013. As soon as we have the link available I will post. Special Thanks to SparkFun for posting our dates, we greatly appreciate it.

Man, I'd love to catch that but I'll be stuck at work. Anyone know from past experience if they are made available later on?

Do any of you use KiCad? My employer uses Altium Designer, and I've begun playing with KiCad since it has some similarity and is open source. If you have used it, I'd be curious to know your impressions, especially compared to Eagle.

Is there a way to make Eagle look more like Protel or OrCAD or Diptrace (or any traditional capture/layout)? I would like to use it, there is so much stuff available but the color scheme drives me crazy. It is like looking at anti-schematics for some of us more seasoned (as in aged and hung in the smokehouse too long) designers. There is something beyond the color scheme that just looks wrong but I can't put my finger on it. maybe those Euro part symbols that have been showing up more and more :-)

Don't get me wrong. The Euro symbols are infinitely better than the schematic standards the IEEE tried to foist on everyone a couple decades ago. If you are not familiar, not these ones, which are traditional http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_symbol

These ones, which were dreamed up by some secret guild and quickly rejected by most organizations but still show up occasionally even in new papers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logic_gate#Symbols

Eagle is not without issues, but as far as the colors go, it's completely customizable, so don't let that stop you. The lowest-level edu/freeware version has the same interface as the top-of-the-line version, so feel free to try it out. (As its interface has never become fully windows-standard you might want to follow along with a tutorial the first time or two to prevent hair loss).

I don't expect higher support levels from Sparkfun, but releasing Open Hardware (or any projects) in Eagle and Diptrace would be a boon to all mankind.

How do you go about selecting these captions anyway?

    • We have a Caption Contest Committee, C^3 for short. The C^3 prepares a report reflecting the advice of experts in the relevant fields, such as Reddit, 4Chan, 9Gag, and so on . This, along with the list of preliminary candidates, is submitted to the prize-awarding institution. The institution meets to choose the winner by a majority vote. Their decision, which cannot be appealed, is announced immediately after the vote. If no caption is awarded the prize, the money is split among the employees of SparkFun to do with as they please.

    • It's not very scientific. A group of 3 or 4 of us look at them and decide which handful we like the best and then we discuss it until we get a winner.

Will these be somewhere available to view after the fact?? I'm at work during those times and my boss would frown on viewing a webinar.

"The webinar will take place on 2/19/2012 at 2 p.m. Eastern." Anyone got a Delorean I can get a ride from so I can attend the seminar? Dang, where's Doc Brown when we need him...
