Friday Product Post: On the Razor's Edge
Our new 9DoF Razor IMU leads the pack, followed by a MAX30105 Breakout, two new Teensy boards, and a tall RPI GPIO header!
Hello, and welcome back to another Friday Product Post! It is December, and we just finished up one of our biggest Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekends. We hope you procured everything you needed, as the holidays will be here before you know it! This week we are pleased to bring you our brand new 9DoF Razor IMU and MAX30105 Breakout boards. We also have the new Teensy 3.5 and 3.6 boards now available with headers and a "tall" Raspberry Pi GPIO header. Let's dive on in and see what Feldi has to show us!
The Razor may not be great on the ice, but it makes for a great IMU!
The SparkFun 9DoF Razor IMU M0 combines a SAMD21 microprocessor with an MPU-9250 9DoF (Degrees of Freedom) sensor to create a tiny, reprogrammable, multipurpose IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). It can be programmed to monitor and log motion, transmit Euler angles over a serial port, or even act as a step-counting pedometer.
The 9DoF Razor’s MPU-9250 features three 3-axis sensors---an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer---that give it the ability to sense linear acceleration, angular rotation velocity and magnetic field vectors. The onboard microprocessor, Atmel’s SAMD21, is an Arduino-compatible, 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0+ microcontroller also featured on the Arduino Zero and SAMD21 Mini Breakout boards.
Taking it to the MAX!
The SparkFun MAX30105 Particle Sensor is a flexible, powerful sensor enabling sensing of distance, heart rate, particle detection and even the blinking of an eye. The MAX30105 has been equipped with three LEDs as well as a very sensitive photon detector. The idea is to pulse the different LEDs, then detect what shines back. Based on the signal signature when returned, you can tell the presence of different types of particles or materials (such as oxygenated blood or smoke from a fire).
A few weeks ago we released the Teensy 3.5 and Teensy 3.6 without headers. Today, we are pleased to inform you that we have the same boards in stock with headers already soldered on! Both the Teensy 3.5 with headers and the Teensy 3.6 with headers are identical in function to the versions without headers; these new models just make it easier for you to incorporate them into a breadboard.
Rounding out the pack today is this GPIO header for the Raspberry Pi. This 2x20 "tall" header has the same number and spacing of pins as a Raspberry Pi and provides your board with the ability to extend the heights of your GPIO to accommodate for enclosures or other parts that can encapsulate your Pi. Perfect for one of our Raspberry Pi enclosures or the new SmartiPi Touch!

While technically the MAX30105 is a photon detector (since it detects light), normally "photon detectors" are expensive units used for detecting a single photon. I would consider the MAX30105 to be a photodetector. I watched the demo video and, just for a second, I thought Sparkfun was selling photon detectors for $13. That would be impressive!
Have you seen the "flip pin" headers that work better with breadboards than the ordinary square pin ones?
