Friday Product Post: Qwiic and Shielded
Three new Qwiic boards, a new iteration of the MindWave Mobile and a small update to our mbed Starter Kit. It's Friday!
Hello and welcome, everyone! It is Friday yet again, and that means we have even more new products for you to peruse. On this first day of December we are here to bring you three new Qwiic boards, one to connect your Raspberry Pi, another to connect your Particle Photon, and the last to incorporate non-Qwiic boards into the system. On top of that we also have the latest edition of the NeuroSky MindWave Mobile and an updated mbed Starter Kit. Without wasting any more time with introductions, let's take a closer look!
Qwiic just increased your connection options!
The SparkFun Qwiic HAT for Raspberry Pi is the quickest and easiest way to enter into SparkFun’s Qwiic ecosystem while still using that Raspberry Pi that you’ve come to know and love. The Qwiic HAT connects the I2C bus (GND, 3.3V, SDA and SCL) on your Raspberry Pi to an array of Qwiic connectors on the HAT. Since the Qwiic system allows for daisy chaining boards with different addresses, you can stack as many sensors as you’d like to create a tower of sensing power!
Similar to the Qwiic Arduino Shield, the SparkFun Qwiic Shield for Photon is an easy-to-assemble board that provides a simple way to incorporate the Qwiic Connect System with your Particle Photon. The Qwiic Photon Shield has four Qwiic connection ports, all on the same I2C bus, as well as a small prototyping area to design and make your own unique circuits. The shield is also equipped with 3-pin buses for ground and 3.3V to help with prototyping.
The last of the Qwiic boards today is the SparkFun Qwiic Adapter. The Qwiic Adapter provides the perfect means to make any old I2C board into a Qwiic-enabled board. This adapter breaks out the I2C pins from the Qwiic connectors to pins that you can easily solder with your favorite I2C-enabled device.

This is the MindWave Mobile+ from NeuroSky, an EEG headset that safely measures and transfers the power spectrum (alpha waves, beta waves, etc.) data via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to wirelessly communicate with your computer, iOS or Android device. Simply slip this headset on to see your brainwaves change in real time! With the MindWave Mobile+ you can monitor your levels of attention and relaxation --- and even learn about how your brain responds to your favorite music. This headset is an excellent introduction to the world of brain-computer interface!
Sweatin' to the Oldies: Vol. 2
The SparkFun mbed Starter Kit (mSK) is a great way to get into user-created projects created by ARM to assist with rapid prototyping on microcontrollers. The mSK, which utilizes the LPC1768 by ARM, includes everything you need to complete 10 circuits that will teach you how to create a USB host, draw text and shapes on an LCD, log temperature data and more.
This rev sees the inclusion of a larger microSD card and thicker resistors that will stay in the breadboards.
