RoboJoust is off
We are sad to announce RoboJoust has been canceled. But the robot hacking on Saturday is still on.
Well, we saw this going differently in our heads. Unfortunately, due to a lack of entrants in the RoboJoust competition, we have been forced to cancel the event. However, we will be having an all day robot hack on Saturday. If you want to stop by after lunch to checkout how the building is going, please do! We'll have about 15 people helping each other learn about building robots and showing off some of their own projects.
We apologize to anyone who was planning to come to the event and watch the demolition! We were really looking forward to it ourselves, but it probably would've been fairly anti-climactic to watch two robots duke it out of the RoboJoust table for 2 minutes and then be done for the day. I concur, this does suck.
I too really wanted to participate, but given a little over a months notice, it's really difficult to get funds and time allocated not only to design and build a robot, but to make a road trip to CO. ( and I'm right next door in NE! ).
Plus, driving into and around Denver in December does not sound like an exciting proposition...
I definitely love the idea, and with 3-6 months notice, I would have enough time to build a serious bot and plan a family vacation around it.
I was also turned off by the hard, concrete floor under the course. A big box of styrofoam peanuts would have been a lot more inviting. Think "American Gladiator", not "Running Man."
Preemptory comment - I have not yet built a line-following or jousting robot. But I had two thoughts about this contest, when I first read about it:
- The whole gravitational disassembly aspect of the contest, while exciting on one level, would have turned me off if I'd just put the finishing touches on a shiny new robot.
- Part of the charm of the contest depends on being there in person, but for those of us who can't swing a trip across country for a contest (or even a workshop and a contest), a mail-in option would be nice. I see the other comment about remote control, but I think it would be sufficient to say that mail-in entries have to be autonomous.
If:
- I had a robot to enter (not yet, but someday. . .)
- I could mail it there and back
- I had a reasonable assurance that it wouldn't fall three feet onto a concrete floor ;)
I would certainly ship it off and see how it would do.

Well, that sucks... I had hemmed and hawed and decided to go ahead and build a last-minute entry (you did say this was about rapid prototyping). I went to register on Friday morning and saw that it was "out of stock"; I figured I had waited too long and all the slots were filled! Too bad it was closed when it was, you might have gotten a few more last-minute entries. Oh well.
How about some type of web based event. Robots that are web controlled and the event streamed live. Could be worth big milage later as a youtube thingy. Then the folks from the UK and around the globe could all participate and the event need not be canceled.
could be something like entrants submit a robot by mail. The robot then connects to a website or some internet connection home where the robot is controlled from when the robot is powered up. Then the robots do whatever they need to do to win. We all watch live and are very entertained.
You know, that's a excellent idea! A web event would allow lots of contestants to participate, and a whole lot more people to spectate the event.

FYI, I think part of the reason that you did not have many entries is because of the date of the event. It is around the holidays and the end of the semester. I know a couple people who were thinking about entering but didn't because we have finals and projects due during the next 2 weeks.
Big bummer! I only wish I lived closer to Boulder because I'd have been all over this competition.
