Meet the Raspberry Pi 5!
The newest Raspberry Pi is here, and we have some new accessories to go along with it!
That's right, you read that title right! Raspberry Pi is back with their newest board, the Raspberry Pi 5! Not one, but two new Pis are all available for pre-order starting today! The new Raspberry Pi 5 boards feature increased CPU performance, a significant GPU performance bump, faster data storage, separate I/O controller over IC, and fully PoE 802.3at compliant! The Raspberry Pi 5 comes in two unique options, a 4GB version and an 8GB version. Let's take a closer look at all of today's new Pi products!
The next iteration of the Raspberry Pi single board computer featuring a 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, Raspberry Pi 5 4GB and 8GB delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to Raspberry Pi 4. Alongside a substantial uplift in graphics performance from an 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU; dual 4Kp60 display output over HDMI; and state-of-the-art camera support from a rearchitected Raspberry Pi Image Signal Processor, it provides a smooth desktop experience for consumers, and opens the door to new applications for industrial customers.
For the first time, this is a full-size Raspberry Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Raspberry Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Raspberry Pi 5, and delivers a step change in peripheral performance and functionality. Aggregate USB bandwidth is more than doubled, yielding faster transfer speeds to external UAS drives and other high-speed peripherals; the dedicated two-lane 1Gbps MIPI camera and display interfaces present on earlier models have been replaced by a pair of four-lane 1.5Gbps MIPI transceivers, tripling total bandwidth, and supporting any combination of up to two cameras or displays; peak SD card performance is doubled, through support for the SDR104 high-speed mode; and for the first time the platform exposes a single-lane PCI Express 2.0 interface, providing support for high-bandwidth peripherals.

The Raspberry Pi 5 case is a refinement of the Raspberry Pi 4 case. With improved thermal features to support the higher peak power consumption of Raspberry Pi 5, it integrates a variable-speed fan. The fan is powered and controlled from a dedicated connector on the Raspberry Pi 5 PCB.
The Raspberry Pi Active Cooler provides an alternative cooling solution for users who wish to use their Raspberry Pi 5 under sustained heavy load without a case. It combines a large metal heatsink with a variable-speed blower, again powered and controlled via the fan connector, and attaches to the Raspberry Pi 5 PCB via sprung pins into a pair of mounting holes.
The white or black Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C PD (Power Delivery) Power Supply will deliver a maximum of 5.1V, 5A enabling the Raspberry Pi 5 to power a wider range of peripherals. The total power drawn from the four USB ports on Raspberry Pi 5 is limited by default to a nominal 600mA; this limit is automatically increased to a nominal 1.6A when the USB-C PD Power Supply is detected.
These are basic kits in 4GB and 8GB versions for getting started with the Raspberry Pi 5. Included in the kit is a new power supply that meets the power needs for the 5. It also includes our choice for a microSD card for use with the Pi line that meets the specs set by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and has fantastic read/write speeds. In addition a MicroHDMI cable is included for interfacing an HDMI display with the Pi 5 and We've also thrown in our Qwiic Shim for Raspberry Pi, the quickest way to use I2C devices with the Raspberry Pi.
These are 200mm display and camera cables for use with MIPI displays and the Raspberry Pi 5. The Raspberry Pi 5 provides two four-lane MIPI connectors, each of which can support either a camera or a display. These connectors use the same 22-way, 0.5mm-pitch “mini” FPC format as the Compute Module Development Kit, and require adapter cables to connect to the 15-way, 1mm-pitch “standard” format connectors on our current camera and display products.

Please, update schedule to deliver pre-sales... I started my order the first day, and all info so far is a mail that stated the initial dates woundt be met and asking me to refrain to ask support... we need more info than that

Simply put, we were not giving updates on Raspberry Pi 5 orders because we did not have much information to share and we have a very small Customer Service team that has been inundated with questions about the Raspberry Pi 5 and their order statuses. Just this week, we have begun to receive shipments from the Pi Foundation to fulfill a chunk of backorders for the Pi5 boards and our Pi5 kits.
Starting next week and again in January and as we advance, you can expect Monthly Updates from us in the first week of each month. As a reseller of Pi boards, we cannot guarantee exact quantity numbers or ship dates, and some months, we may not have much to report on at all, but these emails will contain that information.

I agree. I have friends that ordered after I did from another vendor, and not only do they already have their Pi 5’s, they got regular emails with estimated ship dates per range of order numbers while they waited. SparkFun just telling us to pound sand and not contact them is a little ridiculous.
Is sparkfun also getting the little RTC batteries with the cord attached for the RPI5?
We will! The chemical makeup of the battery is different from any other type of battery we've carried in the past so we want to make sure we have all documentation before listing it on our site.
YAY! Finally a Pi with a built-in RTC! FINALLY -- this has been one of my "hot button" issues for many years. Now if we could only get the microcontrollers to follow suit...
AND the Pi 5 has a power switch to boot! (pardon the pun)
If you pre-order more than one of the RPI 5 items, will they all ship at the same time?
FWIW, I decided to order 2 of the 8GB "kits", as at $114.95 each, they'll each qualify for "free shipping" even if they don't both get shipped at the same time -- I've waited this long to get my paws on one that I can wait an extra few days. I've got enough other "projects" to work on! ;-)
