Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 NoIR

Added to your shopping cart

The Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 NoIR is the latest entry in the mainstream RPi camera line-up, and comes without an IR filter (thus the NoIR). Built around a 12-megapixel Sony IMX708 image sensor module, Camera Module 3 offers a few key enhancements over its predecessor. Improved low-light sensitivity makes for better photos and output in situations where there's not a lot of light. The module also features powered autofocus making it easier to get a sharp picture output. Finally the Camera Module 3 features High Dynamic Range (HDR) support expanding the range of color and contrast in the output.

This NoIR version features the standard lens (76° field of view). It also comes in a wide-angle lens variation which is available in the related products below.

  • Back-illuminated and stacked CMOS 12-megapixel image sensor (Sony IMX708)
  • High signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
  • Built-in 2D Dynamic Defect Pixel Correction (DPC)
  • Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF) for rapid autofocus
  • QBC Re-mosaic function
  • HDR mode (up to 3 megapixel output)
  • CSI-2 serial data output
  • 2-wire serial communication (supports I2C fast mode and fast-mode plus)
  • 2-wire serial control of focus mechanism

Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3 NoIR Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Programming

If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about communication and code.

3 Programming

Skill Level: Competent - The toolchain for programming is a bit more complex and will examples may not be explicitly provided for you. You will be required to have a fundamental knowledge of programming and be required to provide your own code. You may need to modify existing libraries or code to work with your specific hardware. Sensor and hardware interfaces will be SPI or I2C.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

2 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Rookie - You may be required to know a bit more about the component, such as orientation, or how to hook it up, in addition to power requirements. You will need to understand polarized components.

The description of this camera (as well as the Features--as I write this, anyway) is backwards in regards to the IR filter. The black PCB versions do NOT have the IR Filter. The NoIR means No IR Filter. The specifications from the Raspberry Pi Foundation are pretty clear. Most digital camera sensors are sensitive to Near Infrared so most cameras include an IR filter. The black PCB versions of the Pi cameras are built without an IR filter to exploit the sensitivity to Near IR.

Does anybody know the pin pitch of the ribbon cable? I'd like to use this with a 3d printer, but the ribbon cable that comes with it looks like it's probably going to be too short. If it is, I'd like to buy a longer one from DigiKey, but I can't buy one without knowing the pin pitch. From the mechanical drawings of this camera's connector showing it's about 19.61mm wide, and the fact that it's 15 pins, it looks like the pin pitch could be 1.27mm.
