Triple Output LED RGB - SMD Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Soldering

This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.

3 Soldering

Skill Level: Competent - You will encounter surface mount components and basic SMD soldering techniques are required.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

3 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Competent - You will be required to reference a datasheet or schematic to know how to use a component. Your knowledge of a datasheet will only require basic features like power requirements, pinouts, or communications type. Also, you may need a power supply that?s greater than 12V or more than 1A worth of current.

The image shows 3 for $2.25, however I don't know how many you get for that price. It would be nice if Sparkfun stated the quantity.

any thought of a breakout board for this, maybe the slight possibility of it setup for fitting on the 4x4 button pad breakout? I think that that would be a nice challange.

oh wait, nevermind, lol I see it now.... but still maybe something smaller with a footprint for fitting under the buttons of the led compatible button pad...

Hi guys, when using eagle do i need to add a resistor for these leds?(Im trying to make a custom arduino 5V) Thanks!

    • Kamiquasi / about 10 years ago / 1

Yep - as with most LEDs when driven with an Arduino, you'll want to add a resistor to protect the LED / the Arduino, and reduce power use / brightness.

You can use an online LED calculator to get the 'minimum' resistor values to use for the LEDs (the forward voltage for each LED is given in the description), but depending on the application you may want to use a dummy value until you get one of these LEDs in and determine for yourself whether a higher value resistor is preferable.

    Still no breakout available?

  • TECH GEEK / about 12 years ago / 1

Sadly I will be buying these off ebay. I can't afford to pay $0.75 for each (assuming this is for 3 of them) when I need 500 to 1000. I love SparkFun and have never missed a news post but I'm not paying 2k for what I can get for $40

Holy crap! Is that the cost of just one of the little suckers?

  • Hi,

They work quite well with 100 ohm resistor at 3.3V ... maybe better with lower ohm resistor.

Regards,
Thomas.

  • Did anyone tried with 3.3V ?

If you need small (there is a slightly brighter nonstock one).
    1.6mm x 1.6mm.
Digikey has the datasheet, but you have to ask their tech support.

The photo would probably work better with a black background. The white color of the body is being blown out.

    "... breakout board available below."
    I don't see it...
