My dad introduced me to a much better product that's made out of a self-vulcanizing rubber. It's not sticky at all until you stretch it and it comes into contact with itself. Once that happens, it's never going to unravel or come apart in a mess of sticky goo - it turns into a solid rubber coating. If you do have to remove it, you have to cut it off. The really nice thing is it's incredibly durable and it doesn't leave behind any adhesive residue no matter how old it gets.
It's a bit hard to find. The last rolls I bought came from the electrical aisle of the hardware store roughly 5 years ago. If you can find it, I highly recommend it.
You can usually tell if it's the right product by looking at the roll - the manufacturer puts a strip of plastic in between the layers so that it won't vulcanize until you're ready to use it.

I know exactly what you're talking about and my dad too introduced me to it; that tape was amazing to use! I can't find it anymore, though...

Any chance that you'll carry 3M's Super-33+? That stuff is worth its weight in gold. I've generally had very bad luck with off brands, having to use way more than what I should, and having it be only marginally sticky...nonetheless, it's nice to see you carrying at least one variety!
