Mighty Gadget is a UK-based tech blog that covers all aspects of consumer technology.

Some of the main topics covered include smart homes, computer hardware, servers and networking.

Single-board computers have been an amazing way for consumers to build a low-cost low-power computer that can be modified easily for a variety of purposes.

In particular, the Raspberry Pi has proven to be an insanely popular SBC that people often use as a media player for things like Kodi, or a server that can be used for a variety of functions from downloading content, and working as a DNS server to block adverts with PI hole and it is often used as computer to run Home Assistant which can manage all your smart home devices.

With the launch of the new Raspberry Pi 5, the RPi now has significantly more processing power and the ability to use super-fast M.2 NVME SSD drives via a HAT which makes the new Raspberry Pi 5 a much more capable SBC for home server needs.

You can, of course, use an SBC for much more creative projects such as robotics, and the below wishlist highlights some of the products that we plan to try out at some point in the future.

Some popular applications of the RPi for home users includes:

Retro Gaming Console

The Raspberry Pi 5 is powerful enough to emulate older gaming consoles like the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Switch. You can build your own retro gaming console using RetroPie. RetroPie allows you to emulate games from multiple retro systems.

Steps to Build

  1. Install RetroPie on the Raspberry Pi 5
  2. Connect controllers via USB or Bluetooth
  3. Add ROMs for your favorite retro games
  4. Tweak settings like screen resolution and controls
  5. Build a case to house it all With the fast quad-core CPU, this will play most 2D games and many early 3D titles very smoothly.

NAS File Server

You can convert the Raspberry Pi 5 into a network-attached storage (NAS) device. This creates centralized storage that can be accessed by other devices on your home network.

How to Make Your Own NAS

  1. Install an OS like Raspberry Pi OS or OpenMediaVault
  2. Connect external USB hard drives for storage
  3. Configure user access permissions
  4. Access the storage from Windows, Mac, Linux, phones and more This is useful for media servers, backups, file sharing and more. The gigabit ethernet ensures fast access speeds.

Minecraft Server

The Pi 5 has enough processing power to host a Minecraft server. This allows you to play with friends without paying for Realms.

Steps to Create Your Own

  1. Install the Java Minecraft server on Raspberry Pi OS
  2. Port forward the Pi so others can connect
  3. Customize your world, mods, maps and more
  4. Invite friends to join your server You can have up to 10 players online at once with the quad-core CPU and 4GB of RAM.

Smart Mirror

A magic/smart mirror powered by a Raspberry Pi 5 can show weather, news, calendar events, photos and more. It's an interactive display for your home.

Building a Smart Mirror

  1. Place a one-way mirror in front of a monitor
  2. Attach the Pi and use it to control the display
  3. Install MagicMirror2 or similar smart mirror software
  4. Customize modules and voice control with Alexa You can even attach a camera for facial recognition capabilities.

Retro Arcade Cabinet

You can build a full arcade cabinet with authentic controls using the Raspberry Pi 5. It will emulate arcade classics using Lakka or RetroPie.

Making Your Own Arcade

  1. Design and build a wooden cabinet
  2. Add arcade controls like a joystick and buttons
  3. Install Lakka or RetroPie on the Pi 5
  4. Add ROMs for arcade games like Pacman or Street Fighter
  5. Tweak settings for optimal performance With the power the Pi 5 provides, this will offer an authentic and lag-free arcade experience at home.

The Raspberry Pi 5 opens up so many possibilities for DIY tech projects. These are just a few of the best uses for the newest Pi. With the active community constantly innovating, there will likely be many more awesome projects in future utilizing this tiny powerhouse.
