Hello and welcome, everyone! We have a quick week this week with a new 1m long OBD-II extender cable from Macchina and functions as both a splitter and as an extension cable. Because of this new product this week (and the fact that it's still nice enough to work on your car outside), we also want to remind you of two of our other favorite OBD-II products, the Macchina A0 OBD-II Development Module and our SparkFun OBD-II UART interface board. Let's get it started!
This custom-designed OBD-II cable from Macchina functions as both a splitter and at about one meter (~39 inches) in length, as an OBD-II extension cable. Unlike other cables out there, all 16 pins connected between each connector, eliminating troubleshooting headaches. We’re confident you’ll find this OBD-II cable more useful than anything else out there.
The Macchina A0 module plugs directly into the OBD-II port found in most modern cars and receives its power from the port. From there, one can interface with the device via the built-in the ESP32 BLE and WiFi module through a few different methods. The easiest is with software such as SavvyCAN, Torque Lite on Android. Besides getting all on board diagnostic information, you're able to control certain aspects of the car and create cool projects such as dash-mounted, shift lights.
An oldie but a goody! The SparkFun OBD-II UART board allows you to interface with your car's OBD-II bus. It provides you a serial interface using the ELM327 command set and supports all major OBD-II standards such as CAN and JBUS. The board also provides a footprint which mates directly to our FTDI Basic.
That's it for this week. As always, we can't wait to see what you make! Shoot us a tweet @sparkfun, or let us know on Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn. Please be safe out there, be kind to one another! We'll be back with more new products next week so make sure to check back then. Happy hacking!
