And now for an announcement that needs very little fanfare: You asked for it (and asked for it) and we're happy to tell you – THE DUMPSTER DIVE IS BACK, BABY.
What's a Dumpster Dive, you ask? Between prototyping, engineering samples, customer returns, and old stuff that’s been sitting on the shelves for way too long, we've collected quite a terrifying pile of electronic excess. Some of it’s one-off, some of it’s a little broken or ugly, and the rest of it’s just not worth individually listing and selling. We didn’t like the idea of recycling it, since it’s all still useful and worth getting into people’s hands. And so behold: the Dumpster Dive.
Once you've finished your celebratory dance, here are a few details and rules:
In the past, our Dumpster Dives have sold out in a matter of minutes, so if you're interested in getting your claws on a SparkFun Sundry Surprise, set a phone alarm/take the day off/train your dog to bark at noon on the dot -- whatever it takes. We'll update the site with links and more information on the 12th; all you have to do in the meantime is clear some space on your workbench. See you then!
Please, please, please, realize that having an item in your cart DOES NOT reserve that stock for you. You need to have completed your order and paid for the item for it to belong to you. If you want to order other items in conjunction with a dumpster dive, please already have that cart built so that you can improve your chances of obtaining a dumpster dive with that order. Once the Dumpster Dive goes live, they will be out of stock in MINUTE(s)!
This has been one of the chief complaints whenever this promotion runs, and I just want to spearhead this whole thing with that information :)
Love - The hairy guy with the crab mask from the caption thing.
Always during school...
Can I assume that's noon MST?
What time zone should I adjust for?
Please, for the love of your international customers, specify date and time with a UTC ISO timestamp!
"maximum of one of each size box".. oh.. here is hoping to 2.5lbs of scrap! crosses fingers
I wish I could do the same with my partially used electronics and tools... everybody pass to the right on the count of three.
You can, although the concept is to do it for free. Haven't heard of The Great Migratory Box of Electronics Junk? That guy's been cruising the world for years.

Is an equal amount of each box going to be available or will there be less 1.5lb boxes?
Also, THIS IS AWESOME!
You are correct. 1.5lb boxes will be very limited compared to 0.5lb boxes.
Noon Mountain Standard Time?
Correct!
Sooo ... 9am Alaskan / Hawaii, 10 Pacific, 11 Mountain, 12pm Central, 1 Eastern ... Right? Time zones, so easy yet confusing...
No. It's 1452625200 Unix time. That's:
And different times in other places.
That bogged down server and the fury that follows, damn I really wanted this, had both in my cart and both sold out before purchase. FREAKING Bummer.
This was my first dumpster dive, I scored a 1/2 LB. I am super stoked. Thanks Sparkfun!!!!!
How does this work. This will be my first dive in the dumpster. Is it listed on the main site?
The fact that this is happening on my BIRTHDAY is a sign that I should participate!!!!
I've tried for this every year sparkfun has done it, but I've never gotten through.
Is it too much to ask that we submit a request using our accounts and the dumpster dive boxes being distributed by lottery?
You wanna do more Captchas? Smells like Free Day!
shoot, where did those parts from last time go? I should do something with them...
Do you have about the same amount of boxes as the last dive or will there be more available?
We expect to have more boxes than last time, but we also expect they will sell out in a matter of minutes again.
OK I assume the DD starts the instant you guys open for business on 1/12 ? (Which would be 11AM EDT right?) Looks like this will be a cyber-Tuesday!
Dumpster Dive will be live at Noon Mountain Standard Time actually. Prepare yourself!
So then that's 1pm cst? Just wanna get my ducks in a row.
Correct!
