_2018 marks [SparkFun's 15th year in business](https://www.sparkfun.com/news/2571)! Inspired by [traditional anniversary gifts](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_anniversary#Celebration_and_gifts), we're celebrating our 'crystal anniversary' with a series of three crystal-themed blog posts. Welcome to part one._

Back in spring 2017 when I was playing around with casting LEDs in resin, I designed a project called the LED Crystal Goddess Crown that involved LED-embedded resin crystals. I never had the chance to write about it, but now our crystal anniversary is the perfect time to give this project its moment in the spotlight!

The tutorial takes you through all the steps of making your very own LED crystals and using them to make a crown.

We even have a video available on YouTube illustrating the project build.

If you are planning to make your own LED crystals, I highly recommend using this opal glitter for the best visual effect.

That being said, different materials (and different types of glitter) will allow the light to be diffused in many ways. Experimentation is key! Below are some examples of the different looks I got through experimentation.

While the tutorial takes you through turning the LED crystals into a crown, there are endless ways to use them. I can see them being used in some e-jewelry, or even crystal-inspired decor. What would you make with these light up crystals? Share with us in the comments below!

Interested in learning more about LEDs?

See our LED page for everything you need to know to start using these components in your project.

Take me there!
