Hey folks! I know y’all have seen lots about Matter and Thread from us here at SparkFun lately, and we have something new to add to the collection!
We created a brand new walk-through video, so you can follow along with as you’re getting started with the SparkFun Thing Plus Matter! In this video we show you how to use SiLabs’ Simplicity Studio®, a unified development environment that provides access to software and hardware configuration tools, an integrated development environment (IDE), product documentation, example sketches, and more!
Check it out here:
It’s hard to say just how much impact this technology will have, but we can say with confidence it’ll be a big one and we're excited to be a part of it! The relationship between Matter and Thread will revolutionize the development of smart home technologies and boost their evolution, while simultaneously opening the door to innovation. Now it’s just a matter of time until more and more of this technology emerges and grows in capability! Stay at the forefront of it all with us and our friends at SiLabs, who have loads of awesome development documentation available on GitHub.
Want to know more about Matter? Keep reading and take a look at all the great resources we've compiled for you on the topic.
In a nutshell, Matter is an open-source connectivity standard for smart home and IoT devices that accommodates both WiFi and Thread communication. By utilizing Thread, which is a low-power, IP-based mesh networking protocol, Matter devices do not require cloud integration, creating an isolated, private network for your home!
Want to learn more? Great! I love that enthusiasm! Luckily our friend Chris has put together a compendium of various resources that we used on our own journey of discovery with Matter and Thread, which is linked below! There’s also an amazing Tech Talk from Arm we've linked where we and our friends from SiLabs give an overview of what Matter is, its history, use cases, and all sorts of cool things, including a smart-home demonstration of Matter in action! SiLabs is also having an ongoing Tech Talk Series that you can tune into live or watch on-demand later that discuss the development journey with using a Matter device at home.

We’ve been beyond excited to watch and learn as this technology has emerged, so when Silicon Labs approached us about coming together to create an easily accessible board that combines Matter with our Qwiic ecosystem, we leapt at the opportunity. The SparkFun Thing Plus Matter is paving the way for rapid development and prototyping of Matter-based IoT devices!
