Replacement:TOL-11766. The GA1102CAL is the next rev of this oscilloscope, now with faster response speed, a thinner baseline, smaller high frequency noise, and a larger LCD. Go check it out! This page is for reference only.
An oscilloscope can be a very handy instrument to keep on your workbench and this digital storage oscilloscope will help you take your circuit analysis and troubleshooting to the next level. This 2-channel, 100MHz digital scope has a 500 MSa/s real-time sampling rate and comes with everything you need to get up and running. Each of the two included probes features an attenuation switch which will limit the bandwidth to 10MHz. USB-host functionality allows the scope to save waveforms to any USB flashdrive and USB-device functionality (accessible via the USB-A port on the back) allows the scope to communicate with the included software so you can import waveforms and data to the computer as well as software-control the scope. The scope also supports PictBridge compatible printers. The color TFT display and on-screen menu system make it easy to access all of the features of the scope.

i have the 60MHz version of this scope, it has preformed well, and is on my go-to tool list.
I purchased this scope from Sparkfun, but I've lost the software disk. Is there a place I can download the EasyScope software for this scope?
Internet murmurs are that EasyScope released for one OEM brand works for another. Might be worth a shot.
Manufacturer: http://www.siglent.com/ENs/gjjrj.aspx?id=14
LeCroy: http://teledynelecroy.com/support/softwaredownload/easyscope.aspx
Could Sparkfun provide software updates or links to software updates for the ADS1102C oscilloscope? I am sure this support would be welcomed by your customers, and provide additional incentive to purchase this product.
I believe there is an update in the works from the manufacturer, which will be be posting once we have more information.
I am thinking of buying one of these, but the last comment sounds a little grim. Has anyone else experienced something like this description?
I just bought this scope. It's pretty terrible. There are TONS of software bugs on the scope. For example it doesn't always switch the trigger source (ch1 to ch2) even though the GUI says it does. If you use run/stop and try to use tracking cursors it'll only track on the settings used to capture that screen. This means that you can't run stop -> zoom in/out -> use tracking cursors. That's pretty bad...the cursors track as though the original wave form were in front of you. I have to restart this scope (power on/off) every ~30 mins because at some point I just have no idea if the settings that I expect are the settings that are being used for measurement. There have been several glitches wherein the timebase just doesn't update even though I rotate the horizontal knob. This means that the units update, but the waveform doesn't "zoom in". All in all there is a ton to be desired in this scope. It's really frustrating not knowing if your debug equipment is broken or if your design isn't performing as expected. It's cute, it does a few things OK, but in my mind this is really more of a glorified multimeter with bad software. I think in retrospect I'd buy a used tek scope on ebay for the same price. Sure you wouldn't have a color LCD and a usb drive, but at least it would be accurate.
"It’s really frustrating not knowing if your debug equipment is broken or if your design isn’t performing as expected."
Sounds a lot like my university lab experiences.
it seems to work with windows 7 just fine I guess they came out with a software update.
I have never used a digital storage scope before, just the old analog ones. I have one question that puzzle me. It says that it has memory for 20Mpts and that it does 500MSa/s. Does this mean that the total sample time is just 0.04 seconds? That sounds quite short to be very useful.
You can adjust that by changing the sample rate. You will loose resolution but it depends on what you want to capture. If you are looking to capture a very short pulse, say in the nano second range then all you need is 0.04 seconds.
Why must oscilloscopes be so expensive?!
You've obviously never priced out "professional" test equipment (which can cost the same as a good car or a bad house). I used this one extensively before we decided to sell it, and it is a LOT of scope for the price.
There are some extreme scopes that can cost the same as a very good home here in Michigan. Ones with 40GSa/s and have full running Window's OS can cost in the high 200s, mostly used in labs though. For hobbyist this scope should be perfect. Not sure what project you would be doing that would need a bandwidth higher than 100MHz.
Yeah this scope is extremely reasonably priced. Here is an expensive scope for you to look at... http://www.home.agilent.com/agilent/product.jspx?nid=-33202.1010840.00&lc=eng&cc=US
$399 isn't looking so bad anymore, huh?
Analog to digital converters (ADC) used in oscilloscopes are often designed in-house and are the backbone of any good scope. Companies like Agilent, Tektronix, Rohde & Schwarz or LeCroy make their own ADC's. If you were to go out now and buy a 1 giga-sample per second (GSPS) ADC from National Semi (now TI) your going to spend at least $100 (TI ADC081000, 8 bit, 1GSPS) and that's if you buy in quantity. There are ADC's that cost almost $2000 in quantity, just for the chip itself!
from the ADC its pretty simple, an ASIC, DSP or FPGA (or combination) can be used to process the data stream and then display it on the screen.
And if you think $400 is expensive, the Agilent InfiniiVision 2000 series starts at $1200, and that's their cheapest "Economy" scope. The top of the line InfiniiVision 2000 is over 3 grand. But those are very nice scopes with oodles of features, I used one and I want one :)
If you want, troll ebay and every once in a while you can pick up a really decent used scope that at one point in time was top of the line and expensive. I picked up my HP for $200 on ebay and it works fine.
The user manual say "maximum input voltage" 400V. So can i really probe my 230 VAC mains whit this scope directly? Or is it just that it will not be destroyed by it but do not have the scale to measure it?
Because the "vertical sensitivity" say only 2mV/div - 10V/div and that to me look like only a maximum of 80 volts that fit on the screen (8 divisions vertical)
I wonder how the spec's on this scope compare with the Rigol DS1102E. I've seen the DS1102E for the same price and the older 50mhz DS1052E is now $329. The Rigol has gotten rave reviews almost everywhere, though the design does have it's rough points such as using multiple A/D converters to simulate a faster single A/D unit which can cause jitter at high sample rates. The Owon SDS7102 looks like a better HW design and has a larger higher resolution display, but it's firmware SUCKS. If Owon ever fixes the firmware it would be a killer scope.
For people looking for Windows 7 64bits driver, I recommend looking at the following (and oddly similar!) scopes:
lecroy waveace 112 BK Precision Model 2532B (I'm currently using this one)
Need to stock to the EasyScope supplied by Atten though.
Just a heads up in case somebody else has a power up issue. Mine would not power up. I swapped to one of my own power cords and it works fine. The limited functionality that I've tested thus far seems to be great.
I am very impressed with this scope it does the job right and the math for you. and it is so much smaller and lighter for that matter than expected. THANKYOU!
i have just ordered one from a Sparkfun reseller here in Europe for my lab. This is the last thing i get for my lab and i hope that it will not have any issues. I haven't seen any feedback from those that got the first ones!!!
I'm looking forward to hear good news.
Which reseller would that be? Looking for one in Europe that's why I am asking.
it is in Hellas. there is also one in UK but both are expensive. The reason of that as i understand is the customs. Any parcel weight and more than 100$ pass from customs. Especially if they come from US or China.
They are selling them for ~400 Euros, right? Looks like ordering from China is much cheaper but one has to pay custom duty and other associated costs.
yes they really expensive here in Europe. I couldnt find it in better price. I was in US in October but the item was out of Stock, i'm really unlacky. I hope this one will come from the reseller here in Hellas, will be in a good working condition, otherwise i will send it back immidiatelly.
i got the oscilloscope, i'm not really happy. Is there anyone that has the same feeling as me? The oscilloscope is very sensitive of the EMF and especially when is close to a power supply or other equipment. You cannot work like that. In my lab i have more than 2 power supplies, and other equipment that causes some fractuation on the signal. Even the same equipment (oscilloscope) causes problem to itself.
Apart from that has also a lot on noise at its peaks and it is very difficult to measure the p-t-p.
Anyway, i dont expect enything from this oscilloscope, but if anyone has uploaded any video from the oscilloscope he got from here please give us the link to check it out on youtube.
sad.
What is the lowest V/div that this scope does?
I bought the 1102CAL (same scope wider screen :]) does anyone know if you can display measurements like Vpp, Freq, duty cyle, ect. on it or do I really need to go to the menu just to look it up?
Any word on drivers for Vista or 7? Just got the scope today and tried to install on Vista (32 and 64 bit) with no luck. don't have an XP box anymore which is an annoyance as I wanted the ability to connect to PC. HAve you as resellers been able to find out anything on drivers yet? Their web presence is lacking to say the least. I hope someone figures out something for using this on a recent OS and not just the unsupported versions.
Does XP Mode work with it? I have had some luck with some things.
I have some older software as well that just will not work with Windows 7. I will have to dig out an old Windows 2000 machine for that software.
Reviews... This sold out pretty quick, it would be nice to get some feedback / reviews from anyone that now owns one.
Can you please confirm that product TOL-10806 is definitely for the 1102CML scope? The photos show the 1102C and look somewhat different to the photos on the Atten website (knobs in different places etc.).
Compare to:
http://www.attenelectronics.com/Uploadfile/image/customer/1400.jpg
I agree we need to know what model Spark Fun is selling here. The CML has a wider screen and different buttons than the C. I have a hard time clicking the buy button with the model stated as the CML but the C pictured.
Update: This is an ADS1102C and not ADS1102CML. Sorry for any confusion. The product name is now updated.
any word on windows 7 compatibility? Either way I think I'll clear off the top shelf of my desk
I tried the bundled software, and it was unable to install the USB drivers for windows 7. The EasyScope software also supports connecting to the scope w/ a serial connection, but I have not tried that yet/
The DS1052E/1102E are almost identical with this one. The only difference is a slightly change in the button colors and rounded corners, while the software/interface is the same.
I've got the DS1052E and I can only recommend it as a beginner or hobby use. This can definitely also be used for more professional measures, like FPGA signal integrity checking and rising/falling times.
At all, it's a great scope with a nice price.
Call me old fashioned, but i prefer my analog scope.
Still, this looks like an awesome piece of equipment.
At last! I've been waiting for a decently priced scope like this! Thanks sparkfun!
I can't believe it's that cheap! For the last couple months I've been thinking about getting a Rigol 50MHz scope and using the hack (if it even works any more after the software patch) to unlock it to 100MHz.
Any chance you'll be selling a higher bandwidth version anytime soon? I would love to have a compact scope like this at home but I would need at least a 500MHz version.
Please spec the memory size. That's one of the key specs of a DSO!!!!
The manufacturer's data sheet specs "Single Channel:2Mpts;Double Channels:1Mpts"
Check the product link above. This is the 1102CML.
We're working on getting a PDF of the user's manual.
The photos here look quite different from the 1062CML shown on the product page--in particular, the aspect ratio of the screen catches my eye. Do these units have a 7" display?
This is the 1102CML.
Another potential difference: Doing a bit more research, the ADS1102C seems to have 500 MSa/s single-channel sampling rate (the same as specified here) and 250 MSa/s double-channel rate. This could explain the discrepancy with the specs on the product page linked above, which seems to be for the ADS1102CML.
Update: This is an ADS1102C and not ADS1102CML. Sorry for any confusion!
I think I've found the difference... The scope pictured here seems to be an ATTEN ADS1102C:
http://www.google.ca/search?tbm=isch&q=ads1102c
Compare this with photos of the ADS1102CML:
http://www.google.ca/search?tbm=isch&q=ads1102cml
The 1102C, for example, seems to have a 5.7" display, whereas the 1102CML has a 7" display. The product page linked above shows data for the CML series, but there is no mention of the scope SparkFun is selling.
Thank you crwper.
Your post and some price research on the web solved the mistery.
This is really the hard to find and discounted 1102C and NOT 1102CML which costs about twice that ammount everywhere.
I suggest SF correct this fast and sell me one 1102CML at this price.
Sparkfun: Could you clarify this, please? The pictures indeed seems to be of a 5.7" display scope, while the 1102CML is supposed to be a 7" scope (and the pictures on the Atten site looks quite different).
The display is 480x234. Are 234 lines of resolution (vertically)sufficient for analyzing analog signals?
That's what the V/div and Time/div is for, and that's only 6 lines less than the old green HP digital oscilloscopes of the olden days.
Huh. That looks a lot like my Rigol DS1052E.
Rigol is the OEM for Agilent's low-end line (below the InfiniiVision 2000/3000 'scopes). The DS1052E/1102E are basically copies of those Agilent products, and this ATTEN one appears to be a clone of that - it even uses the same model-numbering scheme. Perhaps it's just a re-badging for a different market?
I own the "pretty similar"-looking Rigol, and can wholeheartedly say it's an excellent tool for beginners. This particular one is better value because you need to do some firmware hacking to get 100MHz out of the identically-priced Rigol. Even a simple scope is a potent cure for electronics headaches and this investment will be worth every penny!
wow, they do look pretty similar.
Is it loaded with Tetris? Seriously. Some are :)
The one i got to use in the military ran windows 98, so tetris, freecell, solitaire, great fun when your waiting for them to bring parts out to the jet.
I assume it is windows only? XP and 7?
You can always fix that.
confirmed with XP, I'll try out some others and see what works. Disc doesn't have any information on it, nor does the manual (regarding operating system).
Would love to know if its linux compatible, whether natively or through NDISWrapper
If I had this, the first thing I would do with the software is: ^WINE'd!!!^
this scope looks very similar to the Rigol DS1052E I'd bet you could modify this python program for that scope http://www.cibomahto.com/2010/04/controlling-a-rigol-oscilloscope-using-linux-and-python/
If it is similar to the DS1052E/DS1102E, it supports the USB TMC protocol - it's standardized!
However USB TMC protocol support in the Linux kernel isn't well maintained - last time I tried to use it, the mainline modules failed. However there was source code from Agilent worked. It's poorly documented so it took a while to find a good example program for interfacing with TMC equipment.
I'll try to dig up my old code and put it up on github or something as a starting point for someone...
NDISWrapper is only for network drivers, it wont help for a scope
... i bough my Oscilloscope in 2007, a Tektronix (because its what i used my college lab and loved it)
i could have gotten 4 of these for the price i paid... im not complaining, im just jealous of everybody that is getting a sweet deal with this.... at least i think its a sweet deal...
These cheap scopes are alright for people who can't afford a more expensive model, but not nearly as good as a Tek. You made the right purchase since it seems you had the money.
Well, its good to hear other people having good experiences with Tek scopes! ....
i really wasent complaining, i love my scope... im just saying, this seems like a good deal... im sure alot of people will appreciate having this product available here now.... 1+ sparkfun.
regarding the money, i had just started working, it was my first pay check, straight into a scope... i figured if i had been broke all my life, being broke for one more month would not make any diference in the big picture.
I'm jealous of your simply laid out, usable Tek. :D I wish Dfuse worked in WINE...
I'll bet the Tek will still be going strong long after this gives up the ghost though. I'm not dissing the SparkFun one. I'd snap it up in an instant if I could afford it.
I have a 50 year old Tek scope that still works and it's great. (although right now, it's down for need of a new tube.) The old Tektronix stuff is built to last.
Am I correct in assuming that this will only work on a 120v socket like in the US?
actually, 100-240vac. :-)
When I was at Sparkfun I got to see this. This oscilloscope is super awesome!
The docs say the sampling rate is 1Gsa/s for this model... Why the difference in your description?
We'll check. And for anyone who's wondering why the sampling rate is higher than the "100MHz" spec, ask your doctor about Nyquist.
So is sampling rate > 200Msa/s? Hopefully i learned something in school... :)
I believe the 1 Gsa/s is for single channel mode. If you use both channels you will get 500MSa/s on each channel.
oops - posted a mistaken assumption. Nice that I can edit, even if I can't delete.
