MOSS Ultimate Kit - Exofabulatronixx 5200

This is the Exofabulatronixx 5200 MOSS Ultimate Kit, an incredibly fun kinematic robot construction system from Modular Robotics. Exofabulatronixx 5200 is to be assembled and allows data to be transfered via "magnetic construction" and small carbon steel spheres, meaning you will never need to worry about programming it or messy cables running everywhere, all you need to do is follow a simple simple assembly instructions (that are strikingly familiar to ones found in old Lego kits that we used to play with), flip a power switch and watch your creation come to life! What makes this ultimate truly unique from other MOSS kits is the "Double Brain" Block which uses Bluetooth wireless communication to link your robot to a mobile device or computer providing you with control over your creation! Even if instructions aren't your style there really is no end to the different kinds of creations your mind can come up with, so go crazy, let your imagination run wild, and build masterfully.

The Exofabulatronixx 5200 kit includes 52 MOSS blocks, 140 Carbon Steel Spheres, and a rechargeable LiPo battery with an included Micro-USB cable that powers the kit. THis kit provides you with everything you need to build three basic instruction led robots, everything you need to power said robot, and all the fixins to provide your robot with some rudimentary sensory abilities. MOSS is intended for ages 8 and up.

No coding. No wires. Just imagine, make, and play.

Note: This item may take longer to process due to battery installed in the equipment and therefore does not qualify for same-day shipping policy. Additionally, these batteries can not be shipped via Ground or Economy methods to Alaska or Hawaii. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

MOSS Ultimate Kit - Exofabulatronixx 5200 Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Robotics

This skill concerns mechanical and robotics knowledge. You may need to know how mechanical parts interact, how motors work, or how to use motor drivers and controllers.

1 Robotics

Skill Level: Noob - You will be required to put together a robotics kit. Necessary parts are included and steps will be easy to follow. You also might encounter basic robotics components like bearings, mounts, or other hardware and need a general idea of how it goes together.

Core Skill: DIY

Whether it's for assembling a kit, hacking an enclosure, or creating your own parts; the DIY skill is all about knowing how to use tools and the techniques associated with them.

1 DIY

Skill Level: Noob - Basic assembly is required. You may need to provide your own basic tools like a screwdriver, hammer or scissors. Power tools or custom parts are not required. Instructions will be included and easy to follow. Sewing may be required, but only with included patterns.

Nearly 500 bucks for what amounts to very few blocks or things you can do with them. Even looking at ModRobotic's website reveals some pretty simplistic and boring recipes, usually the same sort of "wheels with sensor in front" type stuff. It's not surprising though, given only 52-blocks in the package. What is the appeal of something like this above something like Legos? At least with Legos you can buy a lot of the "glue" to plug in between the more expensive specialized brain and sensor components. With this, you get very little "glue" to make much. Four wheels? Some corner blocks? A couple flexy blocks? Give me a break. The fact ModRobotics feels the need to mention the steel spheres in the kit really shows that there isn't much on offer here.

The target audience appears to be parents or school teachers (not the kids) who don't give much thought to whether their learning toys will have much lasting power with their kids, but have a budget to waste. This is just so dumbed down, esoteric, with so few items in the box -- and at such a high price (average $9.20 per block!) that doesn't promote buying a lot more "glue" blocks -- that maybe its only purpose is to force its users to look at other products (like Legos) because of the severe limitations of this product line.

If this product is to take off, ModRobotics needs to offer more of its glue blocks for dramatically cheaper prices. Charging $480 for 52 blocks is ridiculous, and doesn't leave much to the imagination even if only because there's so little to work with.

When was the last time you conceptualized, designed, built and tested/played with a bot, or circuit, all in under a minute? For those who like to see their ideas rapidly come to fruition, and for those who don't yet know how to program, wire-up or machine, this is going to be a lot of fun. You might think of this "Ultimate" kit as the largest starter kit, since there are many more advanced features in the works. Until then, sure, Mindstorms and a plethora of Arduino solutions are available for more advanced learning.
