SparkFun Photon ProtoShield

You can't have any development board without some sort of prototyping area, the SparkFun Photon ProtoShield takes care of this. This ProtoShield mates easily with your Photon module and provides a small soldering area and separated power and I2C hook-ups. With the SparkFun Photon ProtoShield you have the control over what kind of project you design for your Photon.

The Particle Photon is a tiny WiFi development kit for creating connected projects and products. Sporting a 120MHz ARM Cortex M3 and built-in WiFi, the Photon is not only powerful, but easy to use. The small form factor is ideal for IoT projects with cloud-connectivity.

Note: Not only can this shield operate with the Photon, it can also be used with the Particle Core! We understand that there are a ton of you out there who still haven't been able to get your hands on a Photon yet and would like to start playing with this shield now. If that person is you we hope we have obliged!

A guide to the online and offline Particle IDE's to help aid you in your Photon development.

Core Skill: Soldering

This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.

1 Soldering

Skill Level: Noob - Some basic soldering is required, but it is limited to a just a few pins, basic through-hole soldering, and couple (if any) polarized components. A basic soldering iron is all you should need.

Great but...

Why not throw in some 12 pin female headers to boot? I ask this because when I make a cool doodad its effectively useless until I order in some stacking headers.

Perfect breakout for the Photon

This board surfaces key power and I2C connections and makes it a breeze to rapidly prototype with the Photon. Using regular female headers, the Photon sits nicely above the board with room beneath for components. .1" pin spacing makes it a snap to add to another circuit, breadboard, whatever...

Photon ProtoShield Review

Good quality. Happy with my purchase. The SCL and SDA are routed from D0 and D1 to the connections at the edge of the board but, no provisions to easily add 4.7k termining resistors. I understand it is a low cost board but pads for termination resistors would be a nice addition. Wished they would also made additional connections for 5 volt (VIN) like they did for 3V3 connections. Be sure to order the headers, it does not come with them.

A very convenient board for adding a few components to a photon.

I used the board to provide pull-ups and connectors for remote thermistors. Having a few columns of additional .1 inch patterns would allow the connectors to be on the same side of the board as the photon and other components.
