Self-fusing silicone electrical tape is the perfect way to insulate and protect your freshly-soldered splice.
This 3m long roll of tape stretches several times its own length to tightly wrap and conform to soldered joints, then securely bonds with itself without any sticky gooey adhesives. The wrapped joint is insulative to 600 volts and water resistant.

Royal blue, royal heat-resistance
I have a collection of tape, but this is different. Not sticky, but sticks to itself somehow. I stretched a thin band to about 150% around my finger and it made a tight rubber band. For science I held my finger against a hot soldering iron and didn't feel anything for almost a second. Then it hurt really bad but I didn't get burned and it had no effect on the tape, not even a smell.
