ProtoBoard - Penta-shape

Replacement: None. We are no longer carrying this protoboard in our catalog. This page is for reference only.

Why not prototype in 3D? The SparkFun Penta-shape is a roughly 1" wide penta-shaped board with 0.1" spaced holes. Use it to create different 3D electronic prototyping shapes. Why penta-shaped? Because we were hoping to build a buckyball, but we failed 7th grade geometry. More shapes to come.

ProtoBoard - Penta-shape Product Help and Resources

Core Skill: Soldering

This skill defines how difficult the soldering is on a particular product. It might be a couple simple solder joints, or require special reflow tools.

1 Soldering

Skill Level: Noob - Some basic soldering is required, but it is limited to a just a few pins, basic through-hole soldering, and couple (if any) polarized components. A basic soldering iron is all you should need.

For those wanting to build a dodecahedron with these, the ubiquitous pattern ('joint 5-leaf flowers') may be less desirable for wiring.
I've uploaded a few different unfolded versions (some are minor variations on others) here:
    http://img155.imageshack.us/i/dodecahedronunfolding.png/
Some are easier to 'fold', others may be desirable when the number of interconnects per pentagon should be minimal (2 max), others yet are highly anthropomorphizable (running chef?)
There's many more ways to unfold a dodecahedron, but these should get you well on your way.

  • hi, would it be possible to post the Eagle files?
    cheers

why are these more expensive than the hex shaped ones????
    cmon, those are BIGGER

    Hey SparkFun Gurus,
Is there any way you could start offering this same red-colored protoboard but that is a rectangle shape, so that one side is the same size as this pentagon and the triangle (4 holes by like 20 holes)?
    Thanks!

Why is this one so much cheaper than a plane 1" square piece of protoboard? I mean the 1" double sided square protoboard currently is $2.50 and this is 50 cents? that's a steal. I'm definitely buying some of these instead, so what if the shape is weird.

In simplistic terms - because they think they can charge more for the square piece, potentially due to demand for square pieces being higher than for the pentagonal / hexagonal pieces.
It also makes sense.. why not charge a premium for a piece that really anybody could just cut themselves, many times over, from a $5 piece of double sided PCB?
Cutting hexagons and pentagons, the other hand, is surprisingly difficult unless you're good with a fretsaw/scroll saw / have your own router :)

Ok. Now look at my homepage:

and PLEASE let us have also equilateral triangle ones! :) I BADLY need them!!! :)
