This assortment of tools is great for those of you who are new to soldering. We've found our favorite, low-cost tools, and created a kit that we would give to our friends. While these tools might not be enough for more difficult, surface-mount type assembly, they should be just what you need for through-hole soldering.
With this version of the kit we've really changed things around. We've added our neutral Digital Multimeter and a pair of wire strippers as well as upgrading the flush cutters! Go hack something!
Whether it's for assembling a kit, hacking an enclosure, or creating your own parts; the DIY skill is all about knowing how to use tools and the techniques associated with them.
Skill Level: Noob - Basic assembly is required. You may need to provide your own basic tools like a screwdriver, hammer or scissors. Power tools or custom parts are not required. Instructions will be included and easy to follow. Sewing may be required, but only with included patterns.

I just started working with circuits and soldering and this kit has most of the basics for a really good price! The solder is lead free so you might find 60/40 to work better than this, but it does its job.
The solder base is not very sturdy with the iron in it and I had to put a small magnet on it to hold it down.
The first iron that came with the kit didn't work (well, for about 5 min it did) but Sparkfun's support was great and they sent me a new one for free! Obviously this should be a rare case but the iron is obviously not a extremely high quality iron.
I do wish it came with tweezers since they are almost essential when working with small parts, but that's just a nit-pick.
This is a great price for a multimeter and basic solder station. It would be nice to be able to select the solder type as an option though to have a choice. The lead free solder is a little more difficult to use than the leaded type.
The Beginner Soldering Kit is a good set for my 8 yr old son. I like the selection and quality of most of the pieces. The only negative I see is the soldering iron stand. It is difficult to set the soldering iron in it without touching the metal coil (thus transferring the heat from the iron to the coil). I would like to have a brass sponge and more solder included in this kit (I would be willing to pay more for the convenience of not having to track down more solder soon after the kit is opened). For a beginner, the small amount of solder is used up quickly. Overall a good kit.
Destroyed my board because I didn't know wtf I was doing. So I ordered a practice board specially engineered for nearsighted noobs. My knowledge is proceeding apace and I will let you know how it works out posthaste. The kit use perchance use more flux methinks.
It works great for the price you get it.
This is a really useful kit. I've done most of my soldering at work so this is the first set of supplies I've owned myself.
I found the lead-free solder very hard to work with. All of my previous soldering experience has been with leaded solder, and this was markedly more difficult. It just really didn't want to flow.
I'm not sure this iron really gets hot enough for the lead-free solder, but getting all of the other components for this price makes it worth it.
The soldering iron on this thing didn't work out of the box.

I ordered this kit after being promised the backordered multimeter would come within the week. Then I was told the part still did not come, and it would be another month. Sparkfun was not willing to compensate me for this except for giving me slightly better shipping deal. They would not markdown the price of the kit to not include a multimeter, so I was forced to cancel my order after waiting for nearly 3 weeks.
The company is obviously not run at a true corporate level, and so you are forced to deal with human error and delays if you want to order through this company.
I could have started my project and finished it in the time it took them to tell me they couldn't get me the part they had advertised on their website.
