This is the Standard Gripper Kit A, a simple and durable robotics kit that is great for "getting a grip" on pretty much any robotics project! Designed for use with any standard size Hitec or Futaba servo, the gripper kit is easy to assemble and requires only a Phillips Head Screwdriver. This Standard Gripper is capable of opening an impressive 5" wide, has an overall body dimension of 5" long by 3" wide, and offers both 0.77" and 1.5" hub patterns for easy mounting on Actobotics components.
Actobotics is a robotics building system based around extruded aluminum channels, gears, precision shafts, and ball bearings. Thanks to the two standardized hole patterns, nearly all Actobotics components can be intuitively connected together. The wide range of components makes building complex electromechanical prototypes or finished projects a reality.

Big gripper for the price. Only modification i would put is rubber on the gripper to get A bit more grip on some objects!
Loved the gripper. Worked great with my Arduino board from RedSpark.
I tried to hook it up to a 30 foot wire, so I could use it with an underwater robot. Everything works fine with short wires, but once I hook it up to the 30 foot cable, all I hear is humming and the claw won't open or close. Any ideas, please? Thank you.
What's the materials used on the gripper? Looks like maybe hard plastic?

You certainly will strip a servo without limiting force. Lets think how to limit force?
1) Motor current: a) limit current b) monitor current and stop (but not much holding force if deentegized)
2) Mechanical: a) slip "clutch" on one the screws (spring and/or slippery washers) b) Replace rigid linkage with elastomer, springs or flexure. Etc....
PS: Look at the video, the photo doesn't have the rotation of the servo in the right position when closed to get symmetrical opening.

My question is how can this be used autonomously to grip objects of different sizes without stalling the servo and possibly damaging it? If it was just a (gear)motor, it could run for awhile, and then be turned off, With a servo, if its told to go to a position past where the grabbers contact a rigid object, it will continue to stall the servo.
Does anyone know if this will mount on the Parallax boe-bot/arduino shield version?
