The pi-top (officially called the pi-top [3]) is a DIY laptop you build yourself that helps you start learning how to code, create awesome devices, and take your knowledge to the next level. This Raspberry Pi powered laptop is an excellent resource to any budding hobbyist, student or intrigued user wanting to learn more about the capabilities of the credit card-sized development board. The only thing this kit doesn't include is a speaker; you'll need to supply that on your own.
The pi-top comes with a 14" HD LCD screen (1920 x 1080 resolution), a slide out keyboard with trackpad, a smart battery pack capable of running the pi-top for 6-8 hours, and a Hub PCB to take care of power management and a host of other functions. Don't worry about cables or your OS either; everything to hook up each part in the box is included (except a small phillips head screwdriver), along with the latest version of the pi-top OS on an 8GB microSD card. Assembly is easy -- just plug or snap in all the parts with minimal use of the included tools.
All pi-tops come preloaded with CEEDuniverse, a multiplayer online game that teaches you how to code, build circuits and make hardware that interacts with the game in real time. For example, you’ll be mining for resources in CEEDuniverse. However, you must program your mining bot in order to activate your Mining Machine. Speaking of mining, Minecraft comes pre-installed on each laptop as well!
This new version has a few additional features as well. We now include both the Raspberry Pi 3B+ as well as the pi-top Inventor's Kit, it is also not compatible with the Pi-top Speaker V1, but is fully compatible with V2. The Inventor's Kit provides a breadboard to snap into the built in Modular Rail as well as buttons, LEDs, potentiometers and more. The Kit also provides instructions and various templates to get you started building your Music Maker, Smart Robot, or Space Race game.

Core Skill: DIY
Whether it's for assembling a kit, hacking an enclosure, or creating your own parts; the DIY skill is all about knowing how to use tools and the techniques associated with them.
Skill Level: Rookie - Basic hand tools are required and instructions will allow more freedom. You may need to make your own decisions on design. If sewing is required, it will be free-form.

Core Skill: Programming
If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about communication and code.
Skill Level: Noob - Programming will be limited to basic drag and drop interfaces like ModKit or Scratch. You won't be writing code, but you will still need to understand some basics of interfacing with hardware. If you?re just using a sensor, it's output is analog.

Core Skill: Electrical Prototyping
If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.
Skill Level: Rookie - You may be required to know a bit more about the component, such as orientation, or how to hook it up, in addition to power requirements. You will need to understand polarized components.

Not quite ready for Primetime
Pi-top support is not very helpful.
1) I tried to change the display resolution and got a black screen. Their response was:1. Reinstall the OS and go through the start-up again 2. Wait 24 hours and boot up the unit. It should prompt the update at that point. Item 1 worked, item 2 did not.
2) I asked about disabling the touch pad because I wanted to use a mounse, and ended up finding a script on the internet that worked.
3) The breakboard has a broken magnet on one bottom corner (but it fits OK).
4) It took more research on the internet to finally get the pi-top speaker to work.
5) I get an error message that memory is low, even if only one app is running.
6) The getting started guide is not a lot of help due to missing information.
Your Noobs download seems to work better with it.

Not worth half the price.
So I have had this product for about a week now and I would not recommend it to anyone. The trackpad is barely usable and the OS uses up to much RAM. As soon as I open up Chromium the OS complains that it is low on RAM. You cant even have more than one thing open before the OS complains that it is low on RAM. The Idea is interesting but it does not work well at all. On the positive side, the batter life is good but sadly they ship this product with the largest wall wart I have ever seen. It is a fun color though. :)

It is not. However, this product already comes with the Pi 3B+ that is compatible with it.
