Flirc Jeff Probe

The Flirc Jeff Probe is an open source in-application debugging tool for embedded microprocessors. It allows you see what is going on 'inside' an application running on an embedded microprocessor while it executes. It is able to control and examine the state of the target microprocessor using a JTAG or Serial Wire Debugging (SWD) port and on-chip debug logic provided by the microprocessor.

The probe connects to a host computer using a standard USB interface. The user is able to control exactly what happens using the GNU source level debugging software, GDB.

  • 1x Jeff Probe board
  • 1x JTAG cable
  • 1x UART cable
  • Supported Target Voltages: 1.8V - 5V
  • Provides full debugging functionality, including: watchpoints, flash memory breakpoints, memory and register examination, flash memory programming, etc.
  • Connects to the target processor using the JTAG or Serial Wire Debug (SWD) interface.

Core Skill: Programming

If a board needs code or communicates somehow, you're going to need to know how to program or interface with it. The programming skill is all about communication and code.

3 Programming

Skill Level: Competent - The toolchain for programming is a bit more complex and will examples may not be explicitly provided for you. You will be required to have a fundamental knowledge of programming and be required to provide your own code. You may need to modify existing libraries or code to work with your specific hardware. Sensor and hardware interfaces will be SPI or I2C.

If it requires power, you need to know how much, what all the pins do, and how to hook it up. You may need to reference datasheets, schematics, and know the ins and outs of electronics.

3 Electrical Prototyping

Skill Level: Competent - You will be required to reference a datasheet or schematic to know how to use a component. Your knowledge of a datasheet will only require basic features like power requirements, pinouts, or communications type. Also, you may need a power supply that?s greater than 12V or more than 1A worth of current.

    The epitome of "Old but Gold", the Jeff Probe is one of the rare examples of a product designed with my lack of budget in mind, bought one a few years ago because I couldn't afford the OG BMP, have used the Jeff Probe extensively, and still can't afford an OG BMP so I started looking for another Jeff. Wish it was still sold by Sparkfun, but I understand the niche market is likely quite small.
