The MLX90393 looks like a very high performing magnetometer. Let's see if we can get it talking.
It's hard to communicate in words the excitement the SparkX has around building up these prototypes. Building and hacking is what made SparkFun and it's like pulling out old toys - I had forgotten how much fun this is!
SMD hand soldering without a soldermask is hard but Joel the solder magician got it working. We'll be experimenting with stencils and photoresist over the coming weeks.
FAIL. We started trying to talk to board over I2C when I noticed the IC started to smell odd - that heat smell. Quickly unplugged and started to trouble shoot. VCC and GND were not shorted but perhaps from the first photo you can tell what went wrong. I'll give you a hint, the MLX90393 has a center pad.
Oops, there is a trace through the center pad!!!
Yep! We're getting better at thinking with no soldermask.
I know I'm a little late to the party, but in the past I've fixed this mistake with a tiny piece of polymide tape such as PRT-10687 on the board.
